What is dry eye?

Dry eye is a condition in which the eyes do not produce enough tears to keep the surface of the eye moist. It’s a disorder that can be caused by many things like eye allergies, dry air, contact lens use, some medications or even autoimmune conditions.

Dry eye can leave us feeling that we have gritty eyes, we might notice some redness or perhaps have blurred vision. Some people experience discharge from their eyes and pain in their eyes or eyelids.

There are many dry eye treatments including artificial tear supplements and ointments, prescription medications, warm compresses, improved blinking technique, punctal plugs (to improve drainage) and surgery to correct anatomic problems that may be causing dryness.

As always, if you notice changes in your vision, experience eye dryness or observe a change in how your eyes feel, make time to talk to your Optometrist. The good news is that dry eye is a common health condition that can be treated.
